The Renegades Counter-Strike: Global Offensive squad scored a massive
opportunity when they qualified for a chance to compete at the next
Counter-Strike major, after their impressive performance at the PGL
Regional Minor Championship.
Renegades came up short against
newly-crowned Asian giants TyLoo, losing two games to one in the grand
final. Despite the Renegades’ Aaron ‘AZR’ Ward putting in clutch
performances, and the team winning the first map in dominating fashion
(16-5 on Cobblestone), they dropped the next two maps, losing 16-5 on
Mirage and 16-13 on Cache.
TyLoo, the Chinese team taking the
global Counter-Strike scene by storm, shot to fame after defeating
powerhouse Luminosity Gaming at DreamHack Masters in Malmo, after
initially losing to LG in the group stages.
The matches, which
were played in the Nexo eSports Arena in Seoul, South Korea, had a
$50,000 prize pool on the line, with the top two qualifying for spots to
compete for a position at ESL One Cologne, considered to be one of the
biggest majors on the CS:GO calendar.
TyLoo walked away with $30,000, while Renegades pocketed a cool $15,000.
The
Renegades weren’t the only group of Aussies at the tournament. Team
Immunity also qualified as the Oceanic qualifiers. While they easily
topped Group A, they fell to the Renegades in the semi-finals, swept
2-0.
